Syria's war: Who is fighting and why
Watch how the Syrian civil war became the mess it is today.
After four-plus years of fighting, Syria's war has killed at least hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions. And, though it started as a civil war, it's become much more than that. It's a proxy war that has divided much of the Middle East, and has drawn in both Russia and the United States. To understand how Syria got to this place, it helps to start at the beginning and watch it unfold:

Ground Zero: Syria (Part 6) - The Free Syrian Army
During his time in Syria throughout much of 2012, videographer Robert KIng followed Aleppo's Al-Tawhid Brigade as he dodged bullets and rocket fire to learn more about the largest brigade of the Free Syrian Army. Somehow Robert managed to track down Haji-Mara, the Al-Tawhid Brigade's commander, for a rare interview, during which the former-businessman-turned-freedom-fighter espouses the many difficulties the rebels face against the alleged brutality of President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Free Syria Army targets government aircraft near Aleppo
The Free Syria Army rebel group claims to have hit a state helicopter near the strategically important city of Aleppo. Amateur video uploaded to the Internet purports to show the aircraft falling from the sky near the Mannagh air base, north of the city.
"In the name of God the merciful, we have managed to surround Mannagh for two months and today we downed a helicopter with a rocket. We will impose a no-fly zone over the air base until we take control of it," said a Free Syria Army fighter in the area.
Losing control of the base would be a major setback for President Bashar al-Assad's forces, which are struggling to push back an armed rebellion that began in 2011.
Anti-government activists report that a second state aircraft was struck down by rebels in the outskirts of Aleppo.

The Syrian Observatory for Human rights, an NGO that aims to report casualties on both sides of the conflict, says at least 13 rebels and five regime fighters have died in the Aleppo area since February 23.

STORYLINE:
Dramatic video showed fierce fighting continuing on the streets of Aleppo between rebel fighters and forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad.
The running street battles took place over the past three days in Aleppo's old city and the nearby neighbourhood of Salah al-Din.
The FSA press centre claims the Free Syrian Army now control close to 70 percent of Aleppo, while regime officials claim they have pushed the fighters out into the countryside.
Apart from the fierce fighting in those areas, there were also reports from opposition activists on Friday that a rebel unit of army defectors had launched a major offensive against security facilities in the city, and that anti-regime forces had targeted air bases to try to reduce the military threat from the skies.
The coordinated attacks began before midnight on Thursday and ended on Friday morning - two days after Assad conceded that his forces had been unable to quell the rebellion.
The rebel offensive targeted an artillery training school, a compound of the feared air force intelligence, and a large army checkpoint, according to Mohammed Saeed, an activist based in the city, which is Syria's commercial capital.
The offensive will focus on specific military and intelligence targets in Aleppo and the surrounding province of the same name, he added.
Rebels also control much of the wider Aleppo province, including areas on the border with Turkey.
